I Am a Nurse

"The No. 1 thing you should never say to me: 'You're too smart to be a nurse.' I
went to nursing school because I wanted to be a nurse, not because I wanted to be a
doctor and didn't make it." — A longtime nurse in Texas
From 50 Secrets Nurses Won't Tell You
Someone said this to me this week:
You're too smart to be a nurse, shoulda been a doc.
Thank you, that's so kind of you to say.  But I really, always, only wanted to be a
nurse.  Because, as a nurse, I get to hug my patients and listen to all their stories.  I get
to provide actual hands on care, get down and dirty, see people at their worst and
hopefully bring them back to their best.  So , yes, God made me smart NOT so that I could
be a doctor.  He made me smart because, as everyone knows, nurses are the brains
behind the whole operation.
Life's too short.  Do what you love and do it wholeheartedly.  Give of yourself
passionately, believing in what He made you to be.
We are all destined for greatness.

When I think back to the day I gave birth to Evelyn, I remember my (splendid, wonderful, marvelous, superb) nurse Cathy more than I remember the doctor that was present.

The world needs more people, like you, who are passionate about their work. :)

Nurses are special... and my husband says that all the time. He also talks about how patients families and his colleagues sometimes under appreciate what they do and how hard they work.

I have been tossing around the idea of going back to school after the kids are a bit older to be a nurse... and I am smarter than my husband and he would tell you that... (so would our grades ;) ) I want to be a lactation consultant and after care nurse for moms. I never thought I would want to work in the health care industry - but I get excited thing about it.

PREACH! Back in high school I wanted to be a doctor for all of about 5 minutes before realizing that that's a heck of a lot of schooling to do something I probably wouldn't love. I have a lot of nurses in my family, and I realized that nursing allows me to marvel at the miracle of the human body and it's workings, while still having patient contact and showing I CARE.

Yes, this is one DIFFICULT position, but being a doctor surely wouldn't change that. Roll with the punches :-)

Your work is infinitely more important than mine, but I get where you're coming from. I get the same kind of questions when I say I'm a journalist who designs and edits for publications. People say, "You should be a reporter."

Like a reporter is a glamorous job. You know, I did that. I was good at reporting. But I didn't LOVE it. So yeah, I COULD be a reporter, but that doesn't mean I should be.

I can't believe there are people out there who actually say such outrageous things!

I khave many close friends who are nurses and several who are doctors. Long ago, before their careers, I never heard either the future nurses or the future doctors considering being either one. They are simply two different sides of a coin.

God bless nurses. :)
