The Magical Gene Pool

I am absolutely fascinated with genetics (as if you needed more proof than I'm a total
nerd).  It's always so interesting to me to hear people's comparisons of our children,
how much they resemble each other, how their eyes are like their father's and their
smiles straight from their mama.  I see both of us in them, little bits and pieces of our
genetic make-up living and breathing in these two sweet souls.  Through our love for
each other, we created new life, and it is a living expression of who we are.  It is an
expanding life line of our extended families, generations of distinct characteristics carried
on.  My sentimental nature (inherited from my maternal grandmother) has made me
a treasure hunter, a memory keeper, a record maker.  I gather bits and pieces of all
our memories, both big and small, and tuck them away in special squirrely places,
hoping that, someday, OUR future generations will look back and see parts of themselves
in us.  Shawn's beautiful eyes, my crazy big smile, Isabelle's perfect eyelashes, Brees's
sweet cheeks.  We are a family, we are tied together through our very own gene pool, and
our resemblances run far deeper than physical characteristics.  We share habits and
moods, preferences and outlooks.  And it's an amazing thing to me: to see myself in
others.  To see what we have created and will continue to build on:
all in the name of love.

I love genetics! Is it really nerdy? Bummer! Have you read the book _The Seven Daughters of Eve_? It's a really fascinating (although by this point in time, probably dated) look at the genetics of all Europeans. Pretty interesting stuff! Happy Friday!

I think genetics are fascinating as well. I used to play the Sims 2 like crazy, and I had so much fun combining different-looking parents and seeing who came out, haha! The resemblance between you two and your bebes is uncanny!

I love how you described genetics, so much more poetic than nerdy. :)

Genetics have always fascinated me as well. I have my children's baby pictures lined up on our wall with my baby pic and their fathers. We sometimes sit and look at all the similarities and differences amongst us all. We each share traits and yet also have our own individuality.

I've just been sitting here staring at the resemblances for about 15 minutes. Genetics are pretty spectacular. Miraculous.

I love this post! Now that I am back with my family, I am seeing all of those resemblances, and understanding why I am who I am, and why I look the way I look. Being surrounded by my family this time around has instilled a sense of pride in me, and even a sense of confidence and self assuredness, that have slowly but surely been growing stronger as I get older.
