This week was so special to us: we learned the amazing news that we are expecting a baby
boy! Shawn and I held hands as the ultrasound tech prepared her equipment,
anxiously awaiting the big announcement. As soon as she placed the probe on my belly,
she called out excitedly, "It's a boy!!". I'm not sure if I've ever seen my husband so
excited! We laughed and cried and held each other close, the news so big and meaningful to
us, it seemed almost overwhelming. We have been through so much this last year: grief,
anger, depression, hopelessness. There were times when we weren't sure how or if we
would be able to move forward. And now, against all odds, we have made it through to
the other side. Instead of Shawn losing his life, we are adding a new life to our family. A son,
a boy who represents hope, faith, and undying love. This baby boy is the light at the end of
a long and harrowing tunnel, he is our new beginning. And as we were introduced to
him through the ultrasound photos, we couldn't help but feel incredibly blessed in
every way.

That afternoon, as I talked with friends and family and told them of our big news, I felt my
son kick for the first time. His little movements were hard to detect at first, his little
feet dancing inside me ever so lightly. But, with each passing day, they have become
stronger and more distinct. And those little kicks, the choosing of a name, a few new pieces
of clothing and a framed photo: they make it all so real. The preparations for his arrival
are just beginning but, in truth, they have been in motion for a very long time. This little
boy was meant to be with us and we will all be better people because of him.
