Getting It Right

Sometimes, when raising small children, you can feel pretty beat down.  The days can seem long, the battles hard fought.  The beauty and unconditional love that accompanies having kids can often be dampened by the actual work of raising them.  The times outs, no you can't have that, and day to day routine can often suck the life out of everyone.  The consistency and patience that are needed to produce positive outcomes often takes more energy than any of us can muster and we are left feeling guilty, incompetent, and completely out of control.  At least I do, anyway.
Sometimes, I don't know if I'm doing anything right.  This whole parenting thing doesn't come with a manual, you know?  And sometimes I wish that it did so that I could gauge our progress and know in my heart that we are getting it right.  But, it doesn't.  The only way that we know how well we are doing is by looking at our kids themselves.  Are they happy? Thriving? Content?  Do they believe in themselves and project positive attitudes?  Do they treat others with kindness and respect and use good manners?  Are they responsible and follow instructions?  And, most importantly, do they know that it is okay to mess up every once in a while?  That no one is perfect and we'll love them no matter what?
We had one of those weekends that showed me that we are, in fact, on the right track. One of those weekends when things just fell into place and everyone behaved and all felt right in the world. On Saturday, Shawn and I took all three kids to the LSU football game.  We tailgated, explored the college campus, and watched ALL FOUR quarters of the game without a single meltdown or temper tantrum.  It was a perfectly sunny fall day, purple and gold colors everywhere, and we bundled up in fleece and flannel.  I packed a picnic for us to enjoy before the game and the kids ate their weight in PB&J and brownies.  We took our time, no rushing around or high expectations.  We let them take the lead, trusting them.  As they rolled down the big hill in front of the Journalism building, I smiled and waved and tried to memorize their happy faces.  I soaked in all the giggles and shrieks of excitement as they weaved their way through the crowd and watched the pre-game parade. And that moment when we stepped into Tiger Stadium, their eyes lit up as they took in the field and the band and the sheer magic of a live football game: it was priceless.  They sat in their seats the whole time, popcorn in hand, and cheered right along with the crowd.  They didn't complain or whine or act up.  They said "excuse me" to their neighbors, thanked us for buying them snacks, and acted like sweet little ladies.  And River, well, he slept the whole time.  All wrapped up and snug in his carrier, our mighty giant boy took in his first game.  His first of many, I am sure.
They weren't born knowing how to behave like this: they've learned good behavior through discipline and hard work.  Those days when we feel defeated and exhausted and discouraged because it seems like all we did was fuss and fight with these defiant little ones: they are worth every second.  Because even when we feel like they are ignoring everything we say, they're not.  They're taking it all in, both the things that we say and the examples we set.  They are learning whether we want to give ourselves the credit we deserve or not.  And we are proud.  As we left that 3 hour long football game and put our sleepy kiddos into the car for the drive home, Shawn and I felt so proud.  They are good kids. And it was a good game.  Geaux Tigers!  And geaux Vasquezs!

Where Ever You Go

Watching my girls grow up and accomplish milestones both big and small has been
an inspiring journey for me so far.  The looks on their faces when they know that
their parents are fully engaged and cheering them on is priceless, it's a pure joy that I
wish I could bottle up and save forever.  I miss out on so much of their lives when I leave
and head out for work everyday, kissing Belle goodbye at the bus stop and
reluctantly dropping Brees off at the sitter.  The working mother guilt is an emotion
that never really seems to go away, not even on my good days.  And so I jump into
my motherhood role on my off time with reckless abandon, savoring every moment,
every request, every step we walk together.  I appreciate our time and live it to the
fullest, knowing how much it means to them as well.
Friday night was one of those small milestones that we celebrated big: Isabelle
participated in a week long cheerleading camp at our local high school and was able to
cheer and dance with the senior cheerleaders.  We made a huge fuss about it: took a
million pictures, sat front and center in the bleachers, whooped and hollered until we
were hoarse as she did her thing.  She was adorable, completely in her element, smiling
that megawatt smile every time someone told her how much she looks like her mama.
It was a great night to catch up with some of my old high school classmates, to
reminisce about the countless amount of Friday nights I spent on those same side
lines, dancing and cheering as a Panthorette.
Isabelle has most of my old dance costumes in her dress up trunk and she loves to ask
me the story behind each one: "Where did you wear this one, Mama?  What song did
you dance to in this one?"  I catch her in the mirror sometimes, flipping her hair and
twirling around in the silver sequins that were my second skin.  Seeing yourself in your
child: it is surreal.  I am so completely grateful to have a daughter to cheer on and
support, the same way my mama always did for me.  She's already asked us if she can
do cheer camp again next year and we wholeheartedly agreed.  We'll be there, tiny
dancer, we'll go where ever you go.

Who Dat

This weekend marked the beginning of our family's very favorite time of year:
football season!!  Yes, you read that right.  Here in the South, women get just as excited
about football as men.  It's all anyone has been able to talk about all week, predictions
and trash talking about opposing teams clogging up my Facebook feed.  The weather even
took notice and our local meteorologist has been encouraging us all week with promises
of a "cool front".  Translation: the high was 88 degrees which basically makes us
all ridiculously happy.  When you've been living with 3 digit weather for months, 88
degrees makes you throw the windows open and drink hot chocolate.  We woke up really
early on Sunday morning, finished all of our chores at lightening speed, had lunch and
got ourselves settled in front of the TV just in time to watch our beloved Saints win the
coin toss.  The familiar sounds of whistles, cheering crowds, and sports announcers filled
the house for the rest of the day as we all snuggled on the couch and ate to our hearts'
content.  And though the Saints suffered a loss on Sunday, our family felt like the world
was right.  It's that time of year when life slows down to accommodate the football
schedule.  We spend time together cheering and yelling and cooking and celebrating.
Friends and family come together and there is just something magical in the air.
Sundays during football season mean that I will spend the whole day with my husband,
win or lose, rain or shine.  It really is my very favorite time of year.

Sweet Friday

This weekend marks the beginning of a VERY important time of year for our family:
Football season is here, my friends, and we are beyond excited!  The sounds of the high
school football games floating through the Friday night air, big Sunday dinners with
family and friends and game day around the big screen, pizza parties on Monday nights
to celebrate the prime time game, trips to New Orleans and all the energy of the Dome,
the comraderie you feel with other fans.  There's just something so amazing about coming
together with your family and friends and witnessing some of the world's greatest athletes
go head to head: Shawn calls it the game of life.
{A bunch of very happy Cajuns, rooting for our Saints}
Shawn played football throughout junior high and high school and is a wealth of
knowledge when it comes to all things sports.  I spent every year from 6th grade until
my senior year on the sidelines of the football field, yelling "First and ten, do it again, go,
go!" and dancing my heart out in support of my boys.  I'm southern, football is in my
blood.  Cajun people get excited when we are given any opportunity to celebrate, eat
fattening food, and cause a ruckus.  Football meets all of those criteria.
{Our growing family at the Superdome, taking Belle to her first Saints' game.}
We think of our family as a team, each and every one of us is essential to the success of
the game.  I look forward to this time of year so much, spending the whole afternoon
snuggled up on the couch, yelling at the TV  and laughing at how ridiculous we are.  I
love listening to Shawn school Isabelle on the details of each play, Monday morning
recaps with my coworkers, smack talking with our out of town family.  It's just so
absolutely fun and we are so ready for another year!
{Brees, 5 days old, enjoying our first Sunday game day as a family of 4!}
Here are a few posts from some of my favorite blogs, describing fun ways they enjoy
spending time with family and friends:
Hilary and her sweet baby girl from Baby Moohoo enjoy stories
Vanessa and Alexa from Little Gray Pixel spend a day at the park
Drea from ohdeardrea and her family enjoy a day trip
Carley and her hubs from All This Grace and Charm do Spain
Caitlin and Rob from To Make Love Stay go camping
The Joyful Sparrow spends time basking in love
Raechel and family from Our Island Outlook are on a boat
Kim and B from Our Life Unscripted hit the State Fair
Keri-Anne from Sweet Days with Elle and Mia enjoys a gorgeous sunny day

And just in case you didn't gather just HOW excited we are...
Have a wonderful weekend, friends, enjoying whatever makes your heart happy!
