Wordful Wednesday: With Brees

Little Brees is not quite so little anymore.  She is a busy toddler with a giant imagination.
She keeps us on her toes with her love of exploring, climbing, and getting into every corner
of our home regardless of what baby proofing tools we put into place.  She was very quiet
for the first two years of her life, saying only a few words here and there.  I didn't worry
about her slow start to conversation, I knew that she would start talking when she was
good and ready.  Because that's what she does with everything.  She is stubborn
and determined and she will not try anything new until she's made her own mind up.  And,
sure enough, she recently decided to open her little mouth and let her voice shine
through.  She talks ALL THE TIME, very loudly and in full sentences as though she's
been speaking for years now.  She likes to dance and dress up in her sister's collection of
ballet costumes.  Shawn takes her into the music room and lets her play the drums
and harmonica and she loves to pull the microphone down and "sing" into it.  She is a
very adventurous eater and will eat most anything placed in front of her.  Except
asparagus.  She HATES asparagus.  Brees is an outdoors loving girl and is happiest playing
in the dirt.  She's one of those kids who always looks a little bit disheveled and I have to
wait until the very last minute to get her dressed when we go out.  And even then she
usually manages to get her clothes/shoes/face dirty.  And forget about hair bows or
barrettes: Breesy does NOT play that.  Brees loves to read books and will beg you for
"one more story, please please please!!" every single night before bed.  She sleeps through
the night in her toddler bed but often takes quite a while to settle down.  Most nights,
she stands at the baby gate in her bedroom doorway and calls out to Belle across the hall
to come and save her.  And Belle almost always does.  The highlight of her day is watching
her big sister get off the schoolbus and run down our driveway.  She seriously thinks her
big sister hung the moon.  She knows exactly how to charm her Daddy into giving her
just about anything and still likes me to rock her to sleep.  She has a bad temper but a big
heart: it's hard to stay mad at her for very long.  She is nowhere near being potty trained, she
is simply not interested and I'm not going to push the issue until she is.  Brees loves to
cuddle and give hugs and kisses.  She is shy around strangers but warms up pretty quickly.
She is warm, full of life, and makes us laugh on the daily.   She is a happy little old soul and
I love her so, so much.

Wordful Wednesday: Easter

Our Easter weekend was 4 glorious days filled with family and love.  It was a Texas road
trip, delicious food, a double date night, afternoon naps with the baby, and good company.
It was a chance to catch up with family we don't get to see nearly enough, new clothes for
our baby boy, Easter egg hunts, and some well needed down time.  It was celebrating
time honored traditions and picking up a few new ones.  Our Easter was spent under the
big Texas sky, the promised thunderstorms never arriving despite the threatening
forecasts.  We were showered in love and sunshine instead.  It was beautiful in every way.

Thanks to the super crafty ladies in Shawn's family, we were able to do lots of fun,
Easter themed projects with the kids.  We dyed Easter eggs using Kool-Aid (full
instructions here) and they came out beautifully.  No water to boil, no smelly vinegar, and
they were done in less than 5 minutes!  We will most definitely be using this method again!

The kids decorated an Easter bunny cake: two round, chocolate layers cut and shaped to
look like a bunny.  They used jelly beans, licorice, and coconut to make their bunny all
their own!

Nanny spoiled all the mamas and bought us each our very own cake pop maker!  We
made carrot cake pops and decorated them like little bunnies.  My baking projects
NEVER come out very pretty but this project was super easy, even for me.

Shawn, Isabelle, and I woke up before dawn on Easter morning and went to sunrise mass,
just the three of us.  Our precious daughter passed right by the kitchen table, knowing that
the Easter bunny had left her treats in her basket.  She passed right by that table without
even peeking, instead starting her day focusing on the true message behind the Easter
holiday: the celebration of our risen Lord.  She constantly amazes me with her grace and
love, her ability to focus on the most beautiful and simple moments in life.  We returned
home from mass to a pancake breakfast, happy babies, and Easter baskets filled with treats.

The rest of our day was spent feasting on an amazing dinner, hunting for eggs, and
enjoying good conversation.  It is such a blessing to visit with family on such a special
holiday, to share stories about old times while creating new stories to tell.  The last time we
saw Grandpa and Nanny and Ladell was at the hospital in Las Vegas, Shawn's life hanging by
a thread, our future a complete uncertainty.  To reunite just 9 months later, Shawn
healthy and well on his way to recovery, my belly growing and filled with the life of
our precious son: it was a full circle moment.  It was the answer to so many prayers to have
us all together, happy and healthy and moving forward.

Wordful Wednesday: Halloween

We started Halloween off right this year with my cousin April's second annual holiday
bash!  Being an elementary school teacher makes my beautiful cousin the hostess with
the mostest as she knows exactly how to entertain our kids and give them a night
to remember forever.  She turned her home into a spooktacular venue and served the
most delicious treats.  We feasted on chili and more candy than I care to admit, jumped
in the Spiderman jumper, baked pumpkin cookies, and did the Monster Mash on the
back porch.  A few things to remember from all the ghost and goblin fun:
1.  Brees hates all things Halloween and becomes a Stage IV Clinger at the sight of
anything  jack'o'lantern related.  I was not aware of her extreme vampire/Spiderman/orange lights/skeleton/pretty much anything else you can think
of aversion until we showed up at the party and she lost her mind.  The poor little love
spent the ENTIRE party in my arms with her thumb in her mouth and her legs
wrapped around me in a vice grip.  No matter how much we bribed her with cookies
and other goodies (what responsible moms we are), she would not budge.  Treat or
treating should be a BLAST this year!
2.  If either of my children scores some M&Ms Candy Corn White Chocolate Candies
this year in their Halloween baskets, no promises can be made on whether or not
said candies shall be present in the morning.  Mama needs a little treat now and then,
too.
3.  When your 8 year old decides to steal your makeup to vamp up her costume, make
sure she isn't using your long last red lip stain.  On her cheeks because she thought it
was blush. Ever.
Happy Halloween!!!
